First, let me start out by saying that I am a 30 year old avid gamer, I play FSP, RPG and sports games and have never heard anything like these before. This is my first pair of 5.1 gaming headsets and I choose the X-Tatic over the Ax Pro and Turle beach X41 after weeks of research solely based on the design and removability of the mic, price and the color (due to the fact that I could not find customer reviews for this version anywhere).
Warning!!!! those who prefer to plug and play refrain from buying these headsets or any 5.1 headsets for that matter. However, if you are a serious gamer and do not mind spending an hour or so switching between different genres of games and movies tweaking these to fit fit your specific audio needs, these are for you and the result is extremely rewarding.
Con’s: If you are an individual who looks at a entire product and company before purchasing something, these could be a problem for you. Sharkoon is a company out of the U.K. as far as I could tell from their website, so if something were to happen getting replacement parts/headsets would probably be slight more difficult than the local competitors. The only correspondence method from the U.S. seems to be by email. This sets also requires a significant amount of wires as do many of the competitors do.
Now for the exciting part, these headphones have offered me a completely different gaming experience. While I was tuning them I found myself looking forward to replaying previous titles to get the full experience I missed the first two or three times playing campaigns. MW2, Bad Co.2, Gears, Madden, 2K10, Mass Effect2, Arkham Assylum, etc.. all sound amazingly refreshing, with an abundance of sound stage accuracy.
Comfortablility- 4.5, I have an peanut head so they are a little big on me, however they remain extremely comfortable after hours of play, ear cups swivel and are nice and big (for those like me with big ears) to cancel out surrounding noises, adjustable mic. They are a little bulky, but not heavy, you can log in a good 8 hours no problem.
Sound Stage- 5, Simply amazing!!!! Crisp bass, great high’s and low’s. Slight hiss, when games are silent and headsets are on full blast, however this can be solved by turning the volume on the pre amp to the max and adjusting the headset volume with the hand held component, no more hiss.
Setup- 4.5, Self explanatory out of the box,comes with everything you need to get started no extra equipment needed. Takes some time to tweak for specific user preferences 1 to 3 hours depending on the user’s attention to fine detail.
Affordability -5, a definite bang for you buck compared to competitor’s.
Quality-5, very sturdy equipment, solid design and build.
Overall, I would give these particular headsets an uncontested 5 stars. One of my buddies purchased AXPRO’s for customer service reason’s, so I will definitely want to hear those soon to confirm what I think was a great purchase!!! I have used other headsets before (not 5.1, but good headsets)and these things are on another level. Enjoy!!
